A cross-state guide to school-counselor renewal has to begin with variation.
The most important distinction is jurisdiction: the school credential answers whether you may serve in the school role; a clinical license answers a different legal question. Confirm the exact figure on your issuing state agency record before you rely on it. Use the renewal decision desk if the real question is whether you need renewal, reinstatement, reciprocity, extension, or a different credential transaction.
The school-counselor credential is not an LPC or LMHC
Identify the credential issued by the state education agency first; a school-counselor credential is not the same thing as an LPC, LMHC, or other clinical board license.
Never use clinical-board CE rules as a substitute for the education-agency renewal checklist unless the education agency expressly recognizes that evidence. Keep that warning visible at the top of the working file.

These examples are intentionally different. Their value is showing where school-counselor renewal can branch: credential type, renewal unit, special content, or application channel.

After comparing counselor examples, verify whether your school-counselor credential follows the teacher-renewal system, a pupil-services system, or an additional mental-health-content rule. The issuing agency's credential record—not a CE provider's description—should answer that question.

Do not let one document carry more weight than it can. Build the file in layers.

A reliable folder includes the state credential snapshot, completion evidence, provider approval information, dates and units, official transcripts, third-party verification, application receipts, and the final renewed credential. When a long lapse resets the counselor credential
If the counselor credential lapsed for years, work from the current standards; content requirements, background procedures, and credential structure may have moved since it was last active.
The education agency decides the credential, not the district
The education agency decides the school-counselor credential; a district decides the counseling assignment. Keep those on separate lines in your file.
School counselor renewal can add profession-specific content
Iowa's Professional Service License is a five-year credential that includes school counseling among its service areas. The current Iowa renewal page requires four renewal credits—or two for a holder of a doctor's or specialist's degree—plus current mandatory reporter training, unless the published advanced-degree/experience alternative applies. This is a different license family from a classroom teaching license even when the same person holds both.
Maryland adds a school-counselor-specific content requirement. When renewing the school-counseling license, the counselor must present one semester hour, one CPD, or an equivalent amount of qualifying CEU work addressing intervention/referral for indicators such as depression, trauma, violence, youth suicide and substance abuse, along with professional resources/best practices for helping students in crisis. MSDE asks for a course description or syllabus when coursework is submitted for this requirement.
That counselor-specific evidence belongs in its own row beside the general renewal total. Also keep DOE school-counselor licensure separate from any clinical LPC/LCPC or other health-profession license. Different boards can have different ethics, supervision and CE rules; satisfying one does not automatically renew the other.

Before filing, confirm:
- 1. The education-agency school-counselor credential status and renewal route, separate from any clinical license.
- 2. Any counselor-specific content requirement is documented on its own line.
- 3. The DOE credential and any LPC or LCPC license are tracked on separate calendars.
Make a boundary map: school credential, clinical license, and employer role
School counselors can interact with two licensing systems, but those systems do not automatically renew each other. Put the state education-department credential in the first column, any separate clinical or professional-board license in the second, and the district assignment in the third. For each column, write the regulator, expiration date, continuing-education rule, and proof source.
Maryland's school-counselor requirement shows why the education credential needs its own content check: the state publishes a counselor-specific renewal requirement covering crisis and mental-health topics in addition to the broader professional-license framework. Iowa's Professional Service License uses its own renewal-credit structure. Neither rule should be replaced by CE completed solely for a separate clinical board unless the educator agency says it counts.
When one activity appears useful to both systems, save the agenda and completion document and verify acceptance with both regulators. Do not describe a DOE school-counselor credential as a clinical license, and do not tell an employer that a clinical renewal automatically preserves school authorization.
